Corporate governance is emerging as an important issue for managers and policy makers globally and particularly in Asia. The traditional focus of corporate governance in Asia has been motivated by a perceived need to attract inbound foreign investment into Asia. More recently, as more outbound investment from Asia (both direct and portfolio) takes place throughout the world, a growing focus of interest is how Asian corporate governance practices will affect economic performance in host countries, including both emerging and developed economies. As well, there is discussion of how Asian corporate governance practices will equip or handicap Asian firms in their efforts to compete outside of their home markets. More broadly, these concerns are linked to the larger debate about whether corporate governance practices are converging or diverging across countries and regions.
A prominent hypothesis in the literature is that the growth of international business is stimulating changes in corporate governance. In conceptual terms, corporate governance and international business “intersect” so that changes in one element are likely to promote changes in the other element. For example, some authors have hypothesized that the integration of Asian capital markets with capital markets in major developed countries is encouraging changes in financial reporting and corporate governance in large Asian companies. Other authors have highlighted the potential for takeovers or minority investments in Asian business by firms headquartered in developed countries to stimulate corporate governance reform in Asia. Conversely, there is a prominent stream of research claiming that divergence in corporate governance practices persists despite closer integration of product, capital, and even labor markets worldwide.
This Special Issue of the Asia Pacific Journal of Management (APJM) will entertain both theoretical and empirical papers. Papers submitted to the conference should address some aspect of the broad linkage between corporate governance changes (or non-changes) in Asian companies as they relate to some aspect of the globalization of businesses and economies in the Asia Pacific (broadly defined) and elsewhere. Manuscripts are not restricted to, but could deal with the following issues:
- Outward FDI by Asian MNEs and their corporate governance practices at home and abroad
- Investments and governance of Asian sovereign wealth funds based in countries such as Brunei, China, Kuwait, Malaysia and Singapore
- Governance of Asian companies as impacted by public policy changes and related activities in developed countries
- Impact of host government regulations (especially in developed economies) on corporate governance of family and state-owned firms, as well as sovereign wealth funds from Asia
- The impact of strategic alliances and mergers between Asian and non-Asian partners on corporate governance practices in Asia
- Trade linkages between Asia and developed economies and their impact on corporate governance practices in Asia
- The impact of Western-educated and/or -influenced Asian managers on corporate govern ace in Asia
- The “importation” of managers from developed countries to Asia and the resulting consequences for corporate governance in Asia
All papers are to be submitted to the APJM website http://apjm.edmgr.com. The deadline for receipt of papers for this special issue is April 30, 2009. The format must comply with submission guidelines posted at the APJM website, and we have a marked preference for submissions which cite, debate with, extend, and/or refute previous APJM papers on similar topics. Please indicate that your submission is to be reviewed for the Special Issue on Managing Corporate Governance Globally (choose that in the “article type” item during the submission process).
Papers will be double-blind peer-reviewed. We will make initial editorial decisions by July 15, 2009. Authors invited to revise and resubmit their work will be invited to present the papers at the APJM special issue conference to be held at SFU’s Segal Graduate School of Business in downtown Vancouver, Canada.
Invited authors (maximum 1 per paper) will be provided free board and lodging for the APJM conference. There will be no conference registration fee for invited authors. Authors are responsible for their own travel.
The papers accepted and presented at the conference will be considered for publication in a special issue of the APJM. Presentation at the conference does not necessarily guarantee publication in the special issue. The combination of a conference and a special issue nevertheless follows a highly successful APJM initiative to bring out the full potential of authors and papers.
