Financial Economics Careers

This major is designed for students interested in both economics and finance, and is aimed particularly at those who wish to pursue careers in corporate finance, financial analysis, insurance and real estate, and/or government agencies where special emphasis is placed on financial economic knowledge.

Financial Economics Curriculum (94-96 Credits):

  • Econ 206, 207, 303, 306, 307, 411, 375
  • Math 124 or Math 157 or equivalent
  • 12 credits of upper-division economics electives under departmental advisement.  A minimum of 8 economics credits must be taken at the 400 level
  • Fin 341, 440, 441, 444 (Financial Economics majors only may substitute ECON 375 as the prerequisite for FIN 441).
  • 12 credits of upper-division Finance electives under departmental advisement (a minimum of 8 of these credits must be at the 400 level)
  • ACCT 240, 245, 341, 342
  • CS 101 or MIS 220
  • DSCI 205 or equivalent
  • Take one Communication Focus (CF) course and complete the upper-division Writing Proficiency (WP) requirement. The CF and WP courses must be taken within CBE and can be completed as part of the above required and elective courses.

     

  • NOTE:  ECON 311 cannot be counted towards the Financial Economics Major
  • NOTE:  ECON 309 cannot be counted towards the Financial Economics Major
  • NOTE:  Financial Economics Majors only may substitute ECON 375 for DSCI 305 as the prerequisite for FIN 441

After the declaration of major, a student will be assigned a faculty adviser with whom the student must consult concerning required and elective courses in the chosen major and concentration. The faculty adviser may also be a source of information concerning career objectives and opportunities.
