EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Introduction:

October is the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During this time, there are a lot of organizations who dedicate themselves in helping spread awareness of breast cancer issues, especially the importance of early detection. As students enrolled in Management 482, Business and it’s Environment, we have chosen the option to conduct a group service learning project. More specifically, we have chosen to work with Boarding For Breast Cancer, a non-profit fund raising organization, and Chirbins, a local music venue, to take a stand against breast cancer, by uniting individuals within our community and the nation at large.

Mission:

Our mission is to increase awareness about breast cancer, the importance of early detection and the value of an active lifestyle.

Project Brief:

In conducting our service learning project for mgmt 482, Business and it’s Environment, our success will be measured ultimately by how effective we are in carrying out the group’s mission statement, in both a professional and ethical way. Our project plans to increase awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early detection and the value of an active lifestyle, in two ways:

1) As a group, our main focus will be to establish immediate community awareness and involvement. We plan on accomplishing this by throwing a benefit concert at a local music venue, Chirbins. Prior to the benefit concert, we have made arrangements to sell baked goods and hand out informational flyers on campus. In addition, we will be setting up an informational booth at the Up & Up tavern on Thursday, Nov. 9th, 2006, as a form of buzz marketing for our benefit concert on November 11th , 2006 the following Saturday. For further marketing information, please refer to the marketing tactics section.

2) As a group, we support the ongoing attempts of the Boarding For Breast Cancer Foundation and it’s efforts to communicate to a much larger audience than just within our specific community. By acquiring funds through raffle ticket sales, bake sales, and personal contributions, and donating them to the B4BC Foundation, we are contributing to their efforts on a nationally continuous basis.

Objectives:

• To increase awareness within the community by bringing 200 + people through Chirbin’s doors.

• To raise $1500 in donations through out the project

• To receive a brand new snowboard to raffle off during the event

• To act legally, ethically and professionally

Description of Business/Organizational Affiliates:

Boarding For Breast Cancer (B4BC) is a non-profit; youth focused education, awareness and fund-raising foundation. It was co-founded in June 1996, by Lisa Hudson and Kathleen Gasperini. Through supporting youth inspired events and programs for breast cancer research, they have promoted the concept of raising awareness of breast cancer. Chirbins is one of Bellingham’s newest music venues. They provide a classy, but comfortable atmosphere, offering fine dining and beverages at a reasonable price. There are places to sit down either at a table or at the bar, as well as an area to dance and enjoy the music. The event will be held on Saturday, November 11th, 2006, and will be featuring two local musicians; Chip and Pan and Misses Funk.

Code of Ethics:
